Many of California Document Preparers’ clients remember the husband-and-wife team, Bill and Mary Schaaf, who recognized an opportunity for a legal document service in their Walnut Creek community. Mary became a Licensed Document Assistant (LDA) and they opened their doors in 2003. The business has grown steadily as the East Bay community responded to CDP’s high level of customer service for uncontested legal matters. After 15 years, Bill and Mary retired.
Brook Thurston, LDA and CDP employee since 2013, is now the office manager. Many of the Walnut Creek team are also licensed LDAs. Brook works with her team to make access to uncontested legal documents as easy and affordable as possible. “In so many cases our clients are going through painful divorces or have just lost loved ones and now find themselves having to go through probate. It can seem overwhelming, yet these are actually very methodical processes. Our tagline, ‘helpful, compassionate and affordable’, is something we take seriously. We’re here to help. It’s our job to listen carefully and make legal processes as seamless as possible.”
We’ll soon be launching a new service—Divorce Mediation. We help couples reach resolutions without the crippling expense and turmoil that can accompany litigation. Over a series of four-five meetings, we work through financial issues and parenting plans to help them start fresh new lives.
During this extraordinary time of COVID-19 closures, California Document Preparers is still open for business. We are continuing to operate in light of the Shelter-in-Place order, especially over the phone, via video chat, or through the website.
